Then & Now: The history behind Ranch Mart
Looking Back
Ranch Mart Shopping Center was built in 1958 by Victor L. Regnier. Vic was a local homebuilder in the area, developing many neighborhoods in Johnson County, and wanted to build the shopping center so nearby homeowners “would have a convenient place to shop and buy groceries.”
Ranch Mart was one of the first shopping centers in the area and started out with a Safeway grocery store, hardware store, bank and other retail shops.
Ranch Mart South was developed on the south side of 95th Street a decade later, in 1968, and designed to match Ranch Mart North.
Ranch Mart soon became a landmark and a central hub for the community. The center was well-known for hosting its annual country fair every summer, complete with family-friendly activities like turtle races, frog jumping contests, along with train rides on the Ranch Mart Express. There was even a “Little Miss Ranch Mart” crowned each year.
Looking Ahead
Ranch Mart Shopping Center has undergone many changes over the years, however, it continues to honor its legacy and deep history within Johnson County. Ranch Mart embarked on a complete renovation in 2021 to revamp and modernize the space. As part of the new design, a walkway and green space was added near the eastern side of Ranch Mart North. Two murals were incorporated into the space as a nod to the center’s original design developed by Victor L. Regnier in the late 1950’s.
To this day, Ranch Mart Shopping Center remains locally-owned by the Regnier family and is operated by Johnson County Management.
It continues to serve the community as a vibrant shopping center and a destination for dining, shopping, entertainment and much more. Ranch Mart also continues its tradition of hosting a large annual celebration, now called ‘Ranch Mart Extravaganza’ as a tribute to the original country fair, complete with train rides on the vintage Ranch Mart Express.
